Government Plans A Separated Tax Directorate

The government has disclosed plan to separate the tax office into two divisions this year concentrating on policy making and implementation that is expected to improve the corrupt directorate general's performance.

In an Idul Fitri occassion at his official residence in Jakarta Finance Minister Agus Martowardojo said the "development planning" for the division under his department in the near future includes separating between its function as regulation maker and as tax administrators, which Agus said is expected to create a more independent tax office with less conflict of interests between its staffs.

Agus even said the separation is a bid to improve service quality and prevent transfer pricing.

The governemnt will also set up another two desks at the directorate.

The quality assurance unit to be assigned to work on discrepancies in claims and reports of tax payment, which Agus said will have a more independent position. And the examination unit that will look deeper into tax dispute and decide, a function which actually held by the Dispute and Appeal Unit of the tax office which was cracked down last March for tax evasion that involves local and multinational firms like Surya Alam Tunggal; Excelcomindo, Dowell Anadrill Schlumberger, Indocement, and three Bakrie & Brother's unit; Bumi Resources, Kaltim Prima Coal, and Arutmin
