Pre-historic Fossils Damaged. Hundreds of pre-historic fossils or around 20 percent of the total 1.100 fossils from the Patiayam site in Terban Village, Kudus, are damaged due to poor storage system. “These include the fossils of Bofidae (a kind of buffalo), Stegodon trigonochepalus (pre-historic elephant), Cervus lydekkeri martin (deer), and Crocodilus sp. (crocodile)," said the Kudus Culture and Tourism Office chief in charge of History and Archeology, Sancaka Dwi Supani.
According to Sancaka, these fossils are mostly 700.000 to 1,5 million years old. They were initially kept at a local home and were recently moved to the Kudus Culture and Tourism Office and the Terban Village Hall.
But because of bad temperature control system, these fossils may be damaged. Sancaka said the regional government wanted to make a pre-historic museum for fossils but this remained a plan due to the lack of funds. Based on the 2007 master plan, Sancaka said, it costs at least Rp 16 billion to build a museum and the infrastructure.
